That's what GM ASEP is all about: a GM-backed solid education combined with invaluable work experience at a General Motors Dealership – and getting paid for doing it!
The General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) is a comprehensive program that's designed to train candidates in leading edge diagnostic and repair techniques on both current and future GM vehicles. GM ASEP is a fully accredited apprenticeship program targeted at fast-tracking the GM Technician to become a productive and in-demand asset to any GM dealership across Canada!
All GM ASEP classroom instructors are trained by General Motors on the latest in automotive technologies. You'll also have the advantage of learning on current model GM vehicles.
Your sponsoring GM Dealership will supervise your work and provide mentorship as you progress through your “In-Dealership Work Assignments” (IDWAs). In addition to providing closure to your classroom training, you’ll learn about shop routine, GM policies and procedures, safety, critical thinking and diagnostic procedures, as well as how to accurately and technically communicate.

Tools Assistance
As with all apprenticeship programs, you are responsible for buying your own basic hand tools. To help with this cost, tool suppliers may offer tool start-up programs for GM ASEP students.
Rewards
GM ASEP offers the opportunity to complete the program without any student debt. Earn as you learn – you are a paid employee during the in-dealership training portion of your education.
How Do I Become a GM ASEP Student?
- First, you must be a Grade 12 graduate, or equivalent.
- Next, you need to obtain employment at a General Motors Dealer who agrees to support your career path as an Automotive Apprentice and to sponsor your admission into GM ASEP.
- The GM Dealer will then assist you with next steps and GM ASEP program registration according to your province’s Ministry requirements, as well as the requirements of your chosen College listed above.
- Once your registration into the GM ASEP program is complete, your journey to an exciting future begins!
