Meet Tyler Jamieson, Controls Development Engineer working on prognostics for Autonomous Vehicle technologies!

1) How long have you been at GM and what is your current role?

I started at GM Canada in May 2015 working on the development of On-Board Diagnostics in Hybrid Vehicle Control Systems. During that time, I had the opportunity to work on hybrid and electric vehicles, which was fascinating. The public is now starting to see how electric vehicles can create sustainable transportation solutions and I am proud to have worked on this technology. Currently, I am a Controls Development Engineer working on prognostics for Autonomous Vehicle technologies. In this role, I am working on developing control systems that contribute to predicting when system degradation could occur on self-driving vehicles. By accomplishing this, we can help provide our customers with enhanced information about their vehicles state of health.

2) What brought you to GM for your career?

Towards the end of my undergrad studies, I developed a strong interest in embedded systems. I really enjoyed my controls systems and mechatronics courses and when I saw that GM was hiring engineers with these skillsets it looked like a great opportunity. The engineers who interviewed me were down to earth, open, and I could sense a real passion for their work. After the interview, I was taken on a tour of the facilities and when I saw the technology I was instantly sold! Thankfully my interview went well and I landed the job!

3) What is the best part about your job?

I strongly value work culture and opportunities for growth because I believe they can help you achieve personal success and happiness. GM Canada has been a champion for this as we have an open, inclusive work culture. I always feel empowered to express my ideas and embrace collaboration. Working for a global company, GM has the ability to provide employees with opportunities across all lines of business. For me, it’s been amazing to meet people from all over the world, in all lines of business and see what types of problems they are solving on a daily basis. We also have an excellent tuition assistance program that has enabled me to continue learning and enhance job-related skills .

4) What’s your favourite GM vehicle?

6) If you could have one superpower what would it be?

7) What’s your favourite 90’s jam?

8) What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you recently?

About a week ago, my Fiancé asked me if I had slept well and I replied that it was good. She mentioned that I woke her up because I was giggling continuously. When she looked over at me, she realized my eyes were shut and that I was in a deep sleep! We shared a good laugh about this. I have no memory of what the dream was about!
