The GMC HUMMER EV Arrives in Canada for Development and Durability Testing

GM’s Canadian Technical Centre engineers have become the first to evaluate the GMC HUMMER EV pickup for cold weather durability testing across General Motors at Ontario Tech University’s Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) Climactic Wind Tunnel in Oshawa.

About five per cent of GM North American vehicles visit the ACE Wind Tunnel for cold weather durability testing when development timing falls outside of GM’s Kapuskasing Proving Ground winter season. While at ACE, the HUMMER EV pickup is subjected to consistent -40C temperatures and highway wind speeds.

GM’s electric vehicles undergo the same rigorous durability testing that internal combustion engine vehicles experience. ACE’s world-class research and development facility features thermal chambers that allow engineers to test and study GM vehicles and systems in a steady, repeatable environment.

So, what problems are engineers looking for?

The goal is to identify issues to prevent them from ever reaching our customers. From the propulsion system to power seats and tailgates, wind whistles, rattles, squeaks, and cabin comfort – Canadian engineers work hard to ensure GM’s software and hardware features within our vehicles will perform in extremely cold temperatures.
