1962

  • GM produces its 75,000,000th U.S. made vehicle (March 14)

  • Chevrolet introduces a new line of smaller cars, the Chevrolet II

1963

  • A new car, the Chevelle, is introduced by Chevrolet in September

  • Buick introduces a new V6 engine for its new Special model which led Buick to the Motor Trend “Car of the Year” award for “pure progress in design”

1964

  • GM-X Stiletto is introduced

  • Pontiac GTO. Start of the compact, high performance muscle car era

  • Cadillac is the first to develop automatic temperature control heating and air conditioning for automobiles

1965

  • GM’s Futurama at New York World’s Fair attracts more than 29,000,000 visitors during a two-year period

  • Luxurious Caprice model introduced

  • Chevrolet is first to build more than 3 million cars and trucks in a single year

  • Oldsmobile introduces the front-wheel-drive Toronado

1966

  • Energy-absorbing steering column introduced

  • Cadillac’s front-wheel-drive Fleetwood Eldorado introduced

  • Chevrolet introduces its sixth line of cars, the “personal size” Camaro, a small, sports-type automobile

  • Oldsmobile Toronado. First front-wheel-drive passenger vehicle produced in America since the 1930s

1967

  • GM produces its 100,000,000th U.S. made vehicle (April 21)

  • Pontiac introduces a third line of cars, the Firebird

1968

  • Safety Research and Development Laboratory and Vehicle Dynamics Test Area are dedicated at Milford Proving Ground

  • GM introduces a specially designed child safety seat to protect one-through-four-year-olds

  • A new 50-storey General Motors Building opens in New York

1969

  • General Motors Institute marks its 50th anniversary

  • Four-wheel-drive Blazer Sport Utility Vehicle introduced

  • GM manufactures guidance and navigation systems, which guided the Apollo 11 astronauts to man’s first landing on the moon and safely back to earth

  • GM introduces the first side-guard door beam

  • GM introduces the Infant-Carrier to provide in-car protection for children less than one year old

1970

  • Cadillac offers the largest production passenger car engine in the world on Eldorados, a 500-cubic-inch V8 delivering 400 horsepower

  • The Monte Carlo is introduced

1971

  • GM forms an Environmental Activities Staff to concentrate on the performance of GM products on the environment

  • Chevrolet introduces the Vega

  • Science Advisory Committee, consisting of top scientists from across the country is formed to advise the GM Executive Committee on GM policies and activities concerning basic and applied research

  • GM designs and manufactures the mobility system for the Lunar Roving Vehicle which enabled Apollo 15 Astronauts to accomplish mankind’s first vehicular drive on the moon

1972

  • The 10-millionth Impala is sold. It is the most popular full-size car in automotive history

1974

  • GM becomes the first to offer air bags in production vehicles

1975

  • GM installs the catalytic converter on all 1975 cars sold in the U.S.

  • Cadillac Seville starts the small luxury car trend

  • Cadillac offers the first U.S. production cars with electronically fuel-injected engines

1976

  • GM introduces its redesigned Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and Cadillac full-size and luxury cars in September

  • Chevrolet introduces the Chevette in October

1977

  • Redesigned Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and Buick mid-size cars introduced in October

1978

  • The General Motors Cancer Research Foundation is formed in September to recognize individual excellence in cancer research

  • GM introduces its redesigned front-wheel-drive personal luxury cars from Buick, Cadillac and Oldsmobile in September

1979

  • 100 millionth Chevrolet is built (’79 Monza)

  • Frigidaire Division appliance business sold

  • GM introduces the Buick Skylark, Chevrolet Citation, Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix featuring front-wheel-drive, transverse-mounted four-and six-cylinder engines.
