  • Pontiac Buggy Company organized in Pontiac, Michigan

1897

  • Olds Motor Vehicle Company organized and first Oldsmobiles produced

1901

  • Oldsmobile creates the first assembly line

  • The famous Curved Dash Oldsmobile runabout: first American car to be manufactured in quantity

  • Speedometers appear first on Oldsmobiles

1902

  • The Detroit Automobile Company is reorganized and renamed the Cadillac Automobile Company

  • Buick Motor Company organized

1903

  • First automobile bearing the Buick name is produced

1904

  • 37 Buicks are built that year

1905

  • Buick assembly operations move from Detroit to Flint, Michigan

  • Two Oldsmobiles finish the first transcontinental race from New York to Portland, Oregon, in 45 days

1906

  • Cadillac is first manufacturer to offer closed bodies as standard equipment

1907

  • A section of the Pontiac Buggy works is equipped for car production and Oakland Motor Car Company is organized

  • William Durant buys 40% interest in newly created McLaughlin Motor Car Company in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada

  • McLaughlin Motor Car Company begins to design and build cars with Buick engines
