Credit Bureaus

Ever wonder who records your credit history? There are two main credit reporting agencies in Canada: TransUnion Canada and Equifax Canada. These organizations maintain specific information about you and your credit activities. They then provide this information - known as your personal credit report - to credit grantors, such as banks, finance companies and retailers, for their use in making credit decisions.

Here's a glimpse of what you would likely find on your credit report:

Included in your credit report Excluded from your credit report
  • Name
  • Addresses
  • Social Insurance Number
  • Telephone number
  • Birthday
  • Employers (current and previous)
  • Credit history
  • Public records (such as judgments and bankruptcies)
  • Credit grantor inquiries (by name)
  • Banking information
  • Collections
  • Medical histories
  • Major purchases paid in full with cash or cheques
  • Business accounts
  • Credit scores
  • Race
  • Creed
  • Colour
  • Ancestry
  • Ethnicity
  • Political affiliations

To ensure your credit report is correct, you should likely review it at least once a year. Check your credit report 90 days before a major purchase to correct any errors.
