Frequently Asked Questions

Dealership

Why can't I find my dealer?

A major part of GM's effort to become lean, profitable, self-sustaining and fully competitive requires a Dealer network that can successfully meet the needs of our customers and the demands of our operations.

As we announced on April 27, GM will discontinue certain brands and reduce our Dealer network to align with the scope and needs of the organization.

If you cannot find your dealer, it is likely that it is one of the Dealers affected by the above-mentioned Dealer network reduction. Please be assured that there will still be a GM-supported dealer to assist you with your sales and service needs. Please use the tools on this page to find the appropriate dealer most convenient to you.

Why has my dealer been asked to close?

A major part of GM's effort to become lean, profitable, self-sustaining and fully competitive requires a Dealer network that can successfully meet the needs of our customers and the demands of our operations.

As we announced on April 27, GM will discontinue certain brands and reduce our Dealer network to align with the scope and needs of the organization.

It is important to understand that these reductions to the Dealer network were planned and would take effect regardless of whether GM decided to launch the New GM through a section 363 (court) process.

What was the rationalization for dealer closures?

General Motors of Canada's rationalization of the Dealer network was extremely difficult and challenging. An extensive list of criteria was developed to determine which dealerships would be retained. Strategic location, proximity to other dealerships, potential for growth and sales, along with many other business factors were considered prior to making our decision. We feel that we have made the best choices for the future of GM and the long term health of our dealer body. This does not make the execution of this plan any easier, as we will be losing some outstanding dealerships that were greatly appreciated in their community. Nevertheless, it is part of our broader restructuring activities, and ultimately, GM Canada will be better positioned with the strongest Dealer network in Canada for our customers and communities. Our goal is to accomplish this reduction in the Dealer network in an orderly, cost-effective and customer-friendly way.

As we transition into the consolidated network across the country, it is our hope that both customers and employees will understand the difficult and painful choices we needed to make to ensure GM Canada has a viable future. We will continue to offer and honour industry-leading warranty coverage, service will continue to be performed through authorized GM dealers and retailers, and customers can confidently continue to purchase our award winning lineup of cars and trucks.

How does this impact the customers of dealers that will not be part of New GM?

A major part of GM's effort to become lean, profitable, self-sustaining and fully competitive requires a Dealer network that can successfully meet the needs of our customers and the demands of our operations.

As we announced on April 27, GM will discontinue certain brands and reduce our Dealer network to align with the scope and needs of the organization.

In mid-May we informed our Dealer network of our specific reduction plans, and since that time we have been working closely with our continuing dealers and those who will phase out their operations over time to ensure a smooth transition for all GM customers.

New GM is committed to maintaining a highly responsive and user-friendly dealership base. While certain dealers may remain open for a limited period of time, customers will be directed to other dealers in the customers' respective areas.

Can I obtain a list of those GM dealerships that will be closed?

As previously communicated, GM will not publish a list of those GM dealerships whose Sales and Service Agreements will not be renewed. Contact your GM dealership should you have questions.

How does this action impact customers of discontinued brands?

The New GM will focus its resources on four core brands, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac. SAAB, Saturn, HUMMER and Pontiac will ultimately not be part of the New GM. GM is working closely with the dealers of discontinued brands to ensure that vehicles will be available for delivery in the near term and parts and services will remain available on a long-term basis.

If the customer believes that the issue they are facing creates an emergency, they can take their vehicle to any GM dealership for warranty repairs. In these cases, the GM dealership must determine if they have the training and tools necessary to perform a warranty repair on another make vehicle.

GM in the U.S. has renewed leasing, will GM Canada also begin leasing vehicles? Why is GM Canada not offering leasing on new vehicles?

General Motors Company in the U.S. has announced an expansion of leasing on select 2009 and 2010 Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Chevrolet models. The leases, offered by U.S. Bank, are part of a pilot program that includes select GM vehicles sold in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan and Ohio. In addition, a lease on the all-new Cadillac SRX will be offered by U.S. Bank nationally. As much as GM Canada would like to offer leasing to our consumers, this will not be available for Canadian Consumers in the foreseeable future.

Did my GM Card Earnings program change? Are my Earnings still valid?

The GM Card® Earnings and Redemption Allowance Program remains unchanged – Cardholders can continue to earn GM Card Earnings on purchases and redeem their GM Card Earnings towards a new eligible GM vehicle, subject to program rules.
