Fighting back, the OnStar way
Picture this: It's just after 5 p.m. on a workday. You head to the parking garage after a long day at the office. You approach the spot where you left your car, but your car isn't there. You call the police and hope they recover your vehicle intact, but there's little else you can do. Or is there?
Stolen Vehicle Slowdown
According to Stats Canada, motorists reported about 160,000 stolen vehicles in 2006. The numbers are grim, but now there is a way to fight back. OnStar recently announced a new service called Stolen Vehicle Slowdown (SVS). Just as it sounds SVS will track down the location of a stolen vehicle and slow it down.
How it works
If an OnStar subscriber with SVS service discovers their vehicle has been stolen, they can call OnStar who in turn will help them get in contact with local law enforcement to report the crime. Using Global Positioning System technology, the OnStar advisor will work with law enforcement officials to pinpoint the exact location of the vehicle. When authorities have determined the scene is safe for a slowdown, they'll ask OnStar to send the stolen vehicle a remote signal bringing it to a safe and gradual stop. The driver still has use of all the vehicle's other functions (steering, brakes, etc.) but is unable to accelerate.
Stolen Vehicle Slowdown will debut on select 2009 model year GM vehicles. Learn more about SVS at OnStar®
