Steps to becoming an eco-friendly commuter
By nature, we're all creatures of habit. So it's tough to change up our daily routine. The good news is you can start with small changes and still impact the environment in a positive way. Here are few easy steps you can take to become a more eco-friendly commuter.
At the coffee shop...
Pass on the paper cup:Most of us can't live without our cup of java in the morning. Invest in a thermos and have them fill it for you instead.
Bring your own fork:If you plan to eat lunch at your favourite coffee spot or any other fast food restaurant for that matter, bring your own cutlery.
At the grocery store...
Opt for re-usable fabric bags:Most grocery stores now sell re-usable bags. Leave a few in the trunk for any last-minute trips. They're great for other types of shopping as well.
Re-use plastic bags:If you have any remaining plastic bags, stash one in the car and collect items for recycling like, the apple you ate on the way home from work, empty pop cans and take-out containers.
Buy groceries in bulk:This can reduce how often you travel to and from the grocery store and it cuts down on packaging.
At the bank...
Don't print:When you use the bank machine, skip printing your statement and save the paper. You can always see your balance on the screen if you really have to know.
Turn off your car:If you're waiting for someone else to use the bank, don't forget to turn off the engine while you wait. This is a good rule to follow pretty much anywhere.
At the rec centre...
Start a carpool:Need to get the kids to their swimming lessons? Meeting friends for a game of squash? Try car pooling.
One paper towel, please:In the public washroom, limit yourself to one paper towel to dry your hands. Better yet? Let them air dry.
Empty your trunk:Last season's hockey equipment weighs more than you think. It can actually increase your gas consumption. Take it out before it empties your tank.
