Green tips for life in the fast lane

You wake up. Get the kids ready. Drop them off at school. Go to work. Do your job. Rush home. Make dinner. Take the kids to hockey practice. And so on and so on. It's tough to stay organized through the chaos of life. Add trying to be more environmentally conscious to the mix and it would make anyone's head spin.

In fact, according to the Professional Organizers in Canada web site, 53% of us believe we live in a state of "organized chaos". And the truth is, in a day that's already filled to the limit, it's easy for good intentions to fall by the wayside. But there are ways to help you get and stay organized while remaining environmentally conscious.

Here are a few...

Use a whiteboard- Whether it's a large whiteboard or a chalkboard, it's important to have a central place for everyone in the family to keep track of medical appointments, courses, activities, birthdays and so on. 1Then be sure to prioritize!

Create kits for the house and car- Kits are a great way to keep everything you need close at hand. For example in the car, create a kit with cloth shopping bags for last minute shopping trips and travel mugs for every member of your family. This reduces the use of plastic bags at the store and paper cups at the drive-thru.

Share the ride- Start a carpool with family and friends. Often they are going to the exact same location for, activities, work, school pick-up and drop-off. There are a few different ways to create and keep track of a carpool schedule such as creating a group on a social media site or signing up for an online carpooling site. Either way, it's a great way to save time and money.

Get your bills sent to your inbox- Nowadays most companies you do business with give you the option to receive your statements online. Or check out ePost.ca, Canada Post's free electronic bill service. From credit card statements to phone bills, it saves paper, gas, postage and best of all; you don't have to file anything away. 2

Be a trip chainer- Despite how it sounds this is actually a good habit. Trip chaining is simply scheduling your errands and/or appointments in the same area of town. By planning ahead and fitting several errands into one single trip, you can cut down on the total distance you're driving - saving you both time and fuel.

These tips won't eliminate all the clutter of daily life but sometimes it's the small, simple changes that can help bring some order to the chaos of everyday family life.
