CUSTOMER PERSONAL INFORMATION

At Motors Insurance Corporation ("MIC") we respect your privacy and value our relationship with you. As the insurer of your SmartCoverage Insurance auto insurance policy, we protect the personal information that you communicated to us to underwrite and administer claims on your auto insurance policy. It may be used only by MIC, SmartCoverage Insurance Services Inc. (our broker), SmartCoverage Insurance Agency Inc. (our Agency), our affiliates and related companies, dealers, our suppliers to manage the insurance coverage provided and for use in promoting joint marketing programs to enhance MIC and SmartCoverage Insurance products and services and marketing initiatives aimed at supporting and improving your total customer experience. Our goal is to enhance your product and service experience with us. By submitting this personal information to us, you are consenting to its use and disclosure for the following purposes:

  • Underwrite your policy;
  • Communicate with you for customer service, and to better manage our relationship with you;
  • Respond to your inquiries and maintain the accuracy of our records;
  • Manage the insurance coverage and Evaluate/settle a claim;
  • Detect and prevent fraud;
  • Provide you with MIC, SmartCoverage Insurance, MIC affiliate and related companies, and MIC business partner products, services and related information and/or promotional materials to meet your needs;
  • Analyze business results; and
  • Meet legal and regulatory requirements.

WHAT INFORMATION ABOUT ME IS COLLECTED OR COMMUNICATED TO MIC AND HOW IS IT USED?

Personal Information about you that MIC may have or collects:

As the insurer and claims administrator of your SmartCoverage Insurance auto insurance policy MIC collects personal information about you that is reasonably necessary for the purposes of administering your auto insurance policy. That information has been collected from you directly or through our broker or agency's Web sites, or from other sources such as dealers, affiliates, service providers, always with your consent when required by law.

For example, when you purchase insurance from us we collect information about you, other drivers in your household, your vehicles and their uses etc. in order to properly underwrite your policy. Further, when you purchase or lease a vehicle, a dealer, as the case may be, will collect information about you that may be shared with SmartCoverage Insurance for the above stated purposes. We and SmartCoverage Insurance also conducts contests, quizzes, surveys, promotions and offers several forms of personalized services such as vehicle insurance, in respect of which you may be requested to provide certain contact and eligibility information such as name, mailing address, telephone number, e-mail address, date of birth and other information that may be required to provide or administer these services or promotions. We may also ask you to provide additional information about your purchasing patterns and preferences, gender and other financial, insurance and demographic information such as family income. We use this information as described in our list of uses set out above. The more information you volunteer, and the more accurate it is, the better we are able to customize and improve your experience with MIC and SmartCoverage Insurance.

WILL MIC SHARE MY INFORMATION WITH OTHER PARTIES?

When you provide personally identifiable information to MIC directly, or to our broker or agency, MIC may share that information with GM dealer network, our affiliates and related companies always for the above stated purposes. For further information about those with whom we may share your information, please contact us. MIC may also share your personal information with our suppliers for the exclusive purpose of providing services for us (e.g. mailings to you in response to your request for information, or to fulfill our obligation in administering your insurance policy).

We may also disclose your personal information as required by law, in conjunction with a government inquiry or in litigation or dispute resolution. In addition, if an MIC service provider is located outside of Canada, your personal information may be processed and stored outside of Canada and the governments of those jurisdictions (eg. the United States) may be able to obtain disclosure of your personal information under their local laws.

HOW IS MY PERSONAL INFORMATION PROTECTED?

MIC is committed to protecting your personal information in full compliance with this Privacy Policy and applicable laws. We employ generally accepted information security policies, procedures and techniques. Your personal information may be stored and/or processed or otherwise used by or on behalf of MIC both inside and outside of Canada.

CAN I OPT-OUT OF MIC MARKETING PROMOTIONS AND INITIATIVES?

If you do not want to be contacted for MIC product, service or marketing initiatives, or if you would like to be removed from any direct marketing initiatives, corporate surveys, telemarketing or direct mail or e-mail lists, or if you would otherwise like to limit our use or disclosure of your personal information, please contact us as indicated below.

Except as required or permitted by applicable law, we will respect your wishes relating to the use of your personal information and we will ensure that your file reflects the limitations that you have requested. Unless they are obvious, we will advise you of the consequences of withdrawing your consent. For example, if you withdraw your consent, MIC may not be able to provide you or continue to provide you with the services or products of your choice, or information about products or services that may be of value to you.

Note: If a correction involves your insurance policy, you will be asked for your policy number, name, address and additional contact information to manage your request.

While MIC uses reasonable efforts to ensure that the information we hold about you is accurate, complete and current, we often rely on you to inform us about changes to your contact or other relevant information (e.g. name, address, telephone number, etc.).

It may be used only by C1C, our affiliates and related companies, dealers, our suppliers and C1C business partners to provide the services related to your vehicle service contract.
