All that truck power isn't just for hauling loads. Meet Dan Saunders, a 28-year Canadian racing veteran who, four years ago, joined western Canada's Supertruck Racing Series because, well, he just couldn't resist the speed. Racing in His VeinsDan roared onto the racing scene in 1978 as top rookie at the Winnipeg Speedway. In '93 and '95 he was crowned Canadian Champion in the IMCA Modified division. Even with his years of track experience Dan found new thrills racing in a pickup truck. It's like Driving on VelcroDan was drawn to the Supertruck series by the incredible stability of the trucks. The wide wheelbase and 10-inch wheels really grip the track. The trucks themselves instantly stand out. "There's a lot more body so we can get more inventive with paint schemes. The trucks have a real NASCAR TM look. It's really not like any other kind of race."Dan says there's solidarity between the drivers too. "The group is a little bit more... mature," he says cautiously. "Most of the guys finance their trucks themselves but no one gets too bent out of shape when they get dinged. We're all Saturday night racers in it for the thrill of competition." The Chevrolet ConnectionThe trucks in the circuit use mostly stock parts. All but three of the racers drive Chevy truck bodies (to Dan the reasons are obvious). And in the 2008 season every truck must use the GM Performance 400 HP Circle Track Crate Engine. "I'd kiss the ring of the guy that created that engine," says Dan. "It's incredibly reliable."Dan drives truck #48 supported by league sponsor JB Waterhauling and Vac. After the first race of the '08 season in Vernon, BC, Dan was tied for second place overall. Although he led for more than 40 of the 75-lap feature race, a collision in the last two laps forced him back. "It comes down to driving ability, luck and maintenance." The trucks are expertly tuned for ultimate performance but Dan wouldn't give away his secrets. "We've got a lot of very good racers but 90% of races are won in the garage at home."
